Age Spots

Unprotected skin, on being excessively exposed to UV rays- whether from a tanning beds, or years of going without sunscreen, protects itself by producing an overabundance of melanin-the pigmented cells in your skin- resulting in uneven patches. Age spots known medically as lentigos and seborrhoeic keratoses are brown skin patches which commonly appear on the back of the hands the face and the back.

With advanced technologies, almost any part of your body with sun and age spots or freckles can be safely treated. The face, chest, shoulders, arms and hands are the most popular because they have typically had the most sun exposure and sun damage.

Laser treatments offer you the ability to erase evidence of years of sun damaged skin. Laser is a quick and safe way to remove sun and age spots with no downtime!

The pigment removal lasers act similarly to a guided missile. The light from the laser beam has a selective affinity for brown discoloration in the skin. It passes harmlessly through the top layer of skin and when it hits the brown pigment cells energy is released causing the melanosomes in the cell to break into tiny particles which are removed by the body immune system. These sun spot and age spot treatments are very safe with low side effects.

This removes the abnormality without scarring or damage, while stimulating collagen production to tighten the surrounding tissue, resulting in improved skin texture and reduced signs of aging. The signs of sun damage will diminish leaving you with clear, younger looking skin.

How does this treatment differ from chemical peels and dermabrasion?

We use the FDA approved Elite Laser System because of its superior results. It is the treatment of choice for these spots, in fact. Age Spots and Sun Spots can be drastically reduced by the Elite laser. Unlike other treatments that remove an outer layer of skin and require significant healing time, laser treatment works by gently and safely penetrating the skin to destroy the underlying vessels and pigment that are the causes of the problem. The outer skin itself is not damaged.

Typically several sessions are required for full-face treatment. The average treatment takes about 15 - 20 minutes and can be done on your lunch hour!

The treatment is performed in a relaxed, comfortable manner without the use of typical anesthetics or gel. Generally patients find removing age spots with laser very tolerable. Each pulse of laser light feels like the tiny snap of an elastic band on the skin. To minimize any discomfort we will provide continuous cooling of the area.

Results may be seen after the first few treatments. Immediately after treatment, the age spots start to darken, and over the course of a few weeks, darkened spots will fade and flake off.

In general we find that laser removal of age spots is permanent, however people do sometimes see new spots appear as they go back out into the sun. These are new spots forming as a result of new sun exposure, not a recurrence of the old, removed spots.

If you wish to see your skin free of sun spots, protection from sun damage is essential. Here are some tips:
  • Use sunscreen (typically SPF 15) on sun exposed areas.
  • If you see the beginnings of age spots or melasma, switch to a higher SPF sunscreen than the one you are currently using.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Try Fantasy Tan custom hand air-brushed tan for the most realistic looking sunless tan.
  • Wear protective clothing.
  • Reapply sunscreen after swimming or excessive sweating.

Remember that with all these treatments, it is essential to keep using sunscreen. Otherwise, new age spots are sure to form.
